Eric R. Kandel, MD
Nobel laureate Eric R. Kandel, M.D., is a University Professor and Senior Research Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Center for Neurobiology and Behavior, Columbia University. He won the 2000 Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Dr. Kandel discusses his background and interest in understanding memory.
Understanding the process of short-term memory is important to understanding ourselves.

Dr. McGrath is a psychiatrist and psychopharmacologist at the Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University. He runs a the Depression Evaluation Service and he is a researcher in mood disorders. He discusses his work and some new and promising diagnostic and treatment approaches.

Dr. McGrath describes his work in understanding the biological basis for the causes of depression and new approaches to treatment.
Research in depression is enhanced by using PET scans of the brain. Through this technique, neurobiological changes can be seen before and after medication.
